What You Need to Know about Raising an American Eskimo Dog
Are you looking to get one of the most beautiful dogs for a pet? Perhaps one with a dense white coat and an affectionate personality? If so, then you can never go wrong with the
. Before you get one though, you would do well to learn as much as you can about the dog breed. Only then can you decide if they are the perfect canine companion for you.
Many believe that the American Eskimo is a descendant of the German Spitz and were brought to the United States sometime between the 1920s. Since then, the popularity of the dog breed surged dramatically. These dogs are highly intelligent and relatively easy to train which made them a favorite sight in traveling circus acts walking on tightropes and other remarkable feats. Today, American Eskimos are highly prized as family pets.
One of the things that make the
so popular as family pets are the fact that they are one of the most friendly and affable among the known dog breeds. These canines tend to be highly affectionate towards their masters, and they love to play as well as very patient. These qualities make them excellent companions for children. Like most dogs, they tend to be wary of strangers, but they eventually warm up to other people if appropriately treated.
Another quality that describes American Eskimos is that they are brilliant. Most dog owners find them highly trainable, and they often pass obedience training with flying colors.
Keep in mind that American Eskimos do tend to be destructive though if they are kept sedentary and excluded from family activities. They crave attention, and this is something that you should expect if you intend to get one for a family pet.
American Eskimos look beautiful with their thick undercoat, but this also presents an arduous task for dog owners. At a minimum, owners will need to brush their coat at least twice a week to prevent tangles and matting. These dogs also tend to shed heavily during the warm summer months and susceptible to dry skin, so it is essential to give them moisturizing dog shampoo whenever you bathe them.
Potential health problems
American Eskimos are a very hardy dog breed, but they are known to be susceptible to specific health problems:
Eye problems (tear ducts)
Aggressive retinal atrophy
If you are concerned about any of the health problems mentioned above, you will do well to speak with a veterinarian about what you can to avert such problems. Many of the conditions like Dermatitis and obesity can be just as easily prevented by making sure that your dog gets the proper care such as regular brushing and exercise.
