Keep Calm and Carry On

Hi Friends,

It is about this time of year that I start to feel a time pressure to get going on my holiday preparations.  I know that I have weeks to do things, but the very fact that there is a time limit puts a sense of urgency/dread/panic into the equation.  This feeling also takes away some of the enjoyment of the season for me.  This year, I want to savor every experience, marvel at the wonder and generally enjoy the preparations instead of getting tied in a knot about them.

My secret is to plan ahead and write my plan down.  I know it sounds very simple, but the planning ahead part frames my mental processes such that there is no dread, there is just anticipation.  At this point, I already know that on Monday, November 23 we will be baking a new side dish recipe to serve on Thanksgiving and that our lights will be going up on the 21st  -- weather-permitting.  We know exactly what we need to do when in order to be able to leave town to visit relatives on December 21st without worry that someone will be forgotten or that we will forget to stop the newspaper and the mail.  Just having the luxury of time to plan and organize our days is made possible because we have been working on our schedule for weeks now.  And, if something unexpected happens (lights don't work, the turkey takes longer to cook or whatever mischief pops up), we are fully prepared to make adjustments in our family schedule so that it doesn't ruin the day.

Speaking of planning, this is a good chance for you to find a yearly planner for 2016 that matches your personality, speaks to your heart or celebrates a passion before we run out of your favorite!

Have a great week!
